Cultivating a healthy body and mind

Bruce Lee described all the benefits of martial arts as covering 3 areas; health promotion, self-protection and cultivation of mind.

Physical benefits

As well as teaching self-confidence and self-discipline, martial arts training can help you achieve a healthier body in many ways:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Muscle tone
  • Weight loss
  • Reflexes
  • Mobility
  • Strength and power
  • Flexibility
  • Stability and coordination

Mental benefits

“There’s no health without mental health” and through the practice of reliving stress, focussing your mind and controlling your behaviour, martial arts training has been shown to improve self-esteem and confidence, and reduce anxiety and depression in both children and adults.

Social benefits

Martial arts training can reduce impulsivity and aggression by improving self-control both inside and outside of the academy. Research has also revealed that people’s relationships can improve because of martial arts’ focus on body awareness, working with others and moral values.

Self Defence

It may be hard to imagine what it would be like to be physically attacked, but for many women and girls this is a reality. Even if it has never happened to you, the fear of it can affect your mental health and confidence.

PB Academy offer self-defence courses for women and girls (14+) aiming to increase person safety and awareness, and increase self-confidence. Over an 8 week course, these classes will help you gain social and awareness skills, defence techniques and health benefits. You don’t need to have any previous training, skills or be at a particular fitness level – just be willing to get involved.

Please contact us for course dates.
